OGE'S AFROBEAT LETTER FROM THE HEART

New optimistic and fun afrobeats EP available now

25 Jun 2024

Oge, Ogechukwu Adama, is an exciting emerging London artist. We’re proud to release his debut EP, ‘Love, OGE’ on our West One Music label.

This upbeat and heartfelt Afrobeat EP reflects Oge’s exploration and processing of his emotions as a young man. Oge shared a few words about the music, his creative process, and what this EP means to him.

Oge came through a programme run by a London music education charity founded by Niall Lavelle and Tobias Silvester. Read more about the charity and why Nial and Tobias began to help emerging London talent.

Oge on the EP

“This EP is a letter from my heart. Most of the songs on this EP give an insight into my life. Creating it lets me take time to explore and understand my emotions. The best way to explain it is by highlighting the emotional rollercoaster that life is, one that we all feel but not many of us process, especially men. This EP was a platform to explore it.

Every song was inspired by what was going on in my life at the time of writing. This EP is a journal about my journey as a young man, inspired by putting myself out there and writing about my experience.

It was one of the best recording experiences I’ve ever had. I didn’t know what to expect before I came, but from the start, Adam and Chris (West One Music producers) were so fun to be around that it hardly felt like work. It was a fantastic experience with loads of inside jokes and an understanding that gave me an insight into these sorts of musical geniuses. It was a privilege working with West One Music and recording in their London studio.

I’ve always written songs here and there but never really took them seriously until four years ago. I got an opportunity to work with XSN and XST, and it drastically changed everything. Since then, music has been an outlet and something that gives me a sense of purpose.

I went to college, and Niall and Tobias were my teachers. They inspired me and helped me improve my songwriting, and we ended up working together on many projects, including this one.

I listen to a lot of Gospel music. I think there’s a lot of creativity in Gospel artists, but they don’t often get the mainstream spotlight. I’ve always liked Omah Lay and the way he put his emotions into a song and still makes it danceable, it’s so creative and I like a lot of his songs.”

More about Niall Lavelle and Tobias Silvester

“We are two musicians and educators with over 20 years combined experience across the sector currently working in Hackney, East London (UK). After teaching for many years, we founded and now run a music education charity, Progression Sessions. Based in studios under EartH in Dalston, we offer free studio time, help and training in all aspects of modern music-making for young creatives across London.

Alongside running our charity, we have been extensively producing and releasing music for TV and Film, predominantly with young artists we’ve previously worked with. This has allowed us to extend the opportunities and benefits of making production music to a group who are often unintentionally excluded from this world due to the lack of the right network.

Young musicians who face challenging circumstances have a rich history of turning that adversity into new and exciting styles of music. This has given birth to many of the latest styles in London and elsewhere in the UK, subsequently conquering the charts and the world. Doing the work we do allows us to play a role, however small, in helping continue that legacy through offering the time and space to create music and bringing some of it to a broader audience with fantastic collaborations like this with West One Music.”
